Mac OS X has native support for Type 1 and OpenType fonts, which can be installed just like other font types on OS X. However, fonts installed in OS X system locations are not available to “Classic” applications. Fonts installed in the OS X native environment can be accessed by (a) any user, or (b) just by an individual user.
To install your fonts using a font management utility (e.g., Extensis Suitcase, Font Reserve, FontAgent Pro or MasterJuggler), refer to that utility’s documentation for instructions on adding and activating the fonts.
1. Before installing your fonts, quit all active applications.
2. Locate the folder that contains the fonts you want to install.
3. Copy or move all the font files from their individual font folders into either of the following locations. (Note that the fonts must be loose in the destination folder, not in a subfolder.)
1. /Library/Fonts/ Note: You must be logged on as an “Administrator” to place fonts in this location. Fonts in this location can be used by any user.
2. /Users/Library/Fonts/ Note: Fonts in this location can be used only by the specified user.
3. The fonts are now installed and will appear in the font menus of your Carbon and native applications.
AppleInsider spotted an eBay listing on Tuesday for a generic desktop tower running Mac OS X Leopard, weeks after Psystar made a very public show of defying Apple’s licensing agreement for Leopard with its Open Computer. “Chris555″ is selling the unbranded desktop for a fixed price of $549.99, plus $50 shipping and handling.
Another boring desktop for sale on eBay, except that this one runs Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard. (Credit: Chris555 (via eBay))
Is this the latest in a wave of Mac clone makers emboldened by Psystar? Apple has remained silent on the issue to this point, but lawyers think the company would have a good chance of enforcing its end-user licensing agreement against companies trying to make a profit on Mac OS X computers. The agreement says the operating system can only be installed on a single Apple-labeled computer.
Apple has left the OS X hacking community pretty much undisturbed, but it will be interesting to see how long it waits before taking action against commercial providers of its operating system.
For the first time since Apple’s launch of the iPhone last year, two mobile carriers will offer the device to subscribers in a single country.
Both Vodafone and Telecom Italia will offer the iPhone in Italy, which seems to lend some validity to recent reports that Apple may be shifting its strategy to become more open before the 3G release of the iPhone.
RBC Capital markets financial analyst Mike Abramsky made the first hints over the weekend in a research note to clients. He reported that after meeting with Apple executives, he felt that the company was about to shift its strategy.
Among the possibilities he noted at the time were phone subsidies, less carrier exclusivity, and official support for unlocked phones.
It is not clear how the deals with both the carriers will work, and if they include revenue-sharing deals with Apple. Both companies remained fairly quiet on specifics surrounding the Italian launch.
Vodafone however did add that it has secured an agreement with Apple to bring the phone to an additional nine markets through the end of the year. Customers in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey will soon be able to purchase iPhones.
Expanding internationally throughout 2008 has been repeatedly mentioned by Apple executives as a top priority in order to reach its stated goal of 10 million phones sold during the year.

You can do a lot with the iPhone, surf the Web, send e-mail, listen to music, and (yes) make phone calls with just a touch of a virtual button. But dig a little deeper, and you can do even more. Now that we’ve had some time to live with the iPhone, we’ve found a few tricks that help us get the most out of it.
Web surfing
Get a Bigger Keyboard : As with any other iPhone function requiring data entry, tapping on Safari’s address bar summons an on-screen keyboard. If you rotate the iPhone horizontally before tapping on the address bar, the Safari window will switch to horizontal mode; then, when you tap on the address bar, the on-screen keyboard will also appear horizontally. More important, it will also be much larger than the standard, vertical keyboard, making data entry a little easier. Unfortunately, Safari is currently the only iPhone application in which this horizontal keyboard appears. (If you want to use the keyboard in its standard vertical orientation, summon it before rotating your iPhone.)
Create a Home Page : When you’re using the regular version of Safari that runs on your Mac (or Windows-based PC), setting a particular site as your home page is as simple as going to the General tab in System Preferences and typing in a URL. You can’t do that on the iPhone, but you can use this workaround: Add your would be home page to your bookmarks list, and then move it to the top of the list. Yes, it requires an extra tap first on the bookmarks icon and then on the bookmark itself but it will get you to your favorite Web page with a minimum of fuss.
Share URLs : If you want to send a friend the URL of a Web page you’re viewing, tap on the address bar, and then tap on Share. A new e-mail message, containing the URL, will open in Mail; just choose one or more recipients, add your comments, and tap on Send.
Scroll in Boxes on a Web Page : If you encounter a scrolling box or list while surfing on your iPhone in Safari, say you’re responding to a post at the Macworld.com forums and you try to scroll with your finger, you’ll find that the entire page scrolls, instead of just the box. The trick is to scroll such areas with two fingers.
Make a Call from Safari : If you find a phone number in Safari that you’d like to call perhaps the phone number of a restaurant where you’d like to make reservations you needn’t jump to the phone component. Just tap on the number, and the iPhone will dial it for you. (This also works with phone numbers and URLs embedded in e-mails and SMS chats; tapping on either one will place a call or open a Web page, respectively.)
Investigate Links : In Safari, if you hold your fingertip down on a link instead of tapping, you’ll summon an information balloon that displays the underlying URL. The same thing happens in Mail when you hold on a link. Now when those “account update” e-mails arrive, you can press and hold on the link to find out if you’re really going to be taken to the site the e-mail indicates it’ll take you to.
Go Straight to the Top :When viewing a long Web page, if you want to get back to the top, or access Safari’s address field, you don’t have to scroll all the way up; instead, just tap on the gray status bar at the top of the iPhone’s screen. You’ll be immediately transported to the top of the current Web page.
