    QSTR Business Opportunity is a scam?

    Published by djyano under Scam Edit This

    I got to know of this business opportunity through a newspaper advertisement written working from your comfort of your home.Details given in the ads is only earnings ranging SGD500 - SGD5000 and a website link.So after reading their ads, i am very interested.

    So i copied their website link and browse the content, the website refused to reveal anything related to the business model. To fulfill my curiosity, i leave my contact details so they can contact me. After that i continued with my blogging, about 2 hours later, a lady called me regarding this Business Opportunity.

    I asked the person that called me, what is this company about and what they selling. She can’t me give any answers.

    After getting in touch with the people from QSTR, they sent me a free online manual which would only appear for a limited period of time. The online manual did not reveal much on the operations of the company. It only featured heaps of testimonials from people who have benefited from the programme.

    Upon expiration of the online manual, the lady gave me two packages to choose from. S$25 for an online gold manual and video download, and a S$60 for DVD and an offline gold manual. She refused to reveal anything related to the business model.

    I felt very sneaky about this and find something wrong about this. So i started to google about this QSTR Business Opportunity and found this blog.

    If you sign for he S$25 package. You will get online manual, the online gold manual contains information on the current world and the future trend of businesses. After watching the videos and going through the manual, there is a questionnaire to fill up.

    When the package expires, an online Skype interview was arranged among myself, the introducer (the person who pasted the flyer) and a mentor. The entire interview lasted for 2 hours.

    QSTR is a home-based business. It is a network marketing company, marketing products from Herbalife. I didn’t choose to take up this opportunity however, because it requires one to buy the products and consume them. I was asked to buy and eat the pills without knowing the ingredients and effects. And I would need to also buy the pills every month to sustain the account.

    Customizing Your Own Window XP Interface to MAC OS X

    Published by djyano under XP Edit This

    So, you want to customize your ugly Windows XP interface? It’s really not that difficult to do, and with a little luck, you’ll be able change Windows XP interface. First, here’s a list of the programs you’ll need:

    You will need:

    StyleXP (skins the Graphical User Interface of your operating system)

    ObjectBar (the white Finder bar on the top of Macs; has File, Edit, View, etc. on it.)

    ObjectDock (The dock on The bottom of a Mac that contains icons and shortcuts to programs)

    Trillian (chat program that can be skinned to resemble iChat)

    YzToolbar (skins the toolbar icons in your Windows windows)

    YzShadow (puts a lovely drop shadow under your windows á la Mac OS)

    Rainlendar (popular skinable desktop calendar)

    Rainmeter (skinnable desktop system statistics)

    Samurize (like Konfabulator for the Mac; can display just about anything, such as clocks, uptime, and the weather)

    iTunes for Windows (self-explanatory)

    Icons (The pretty little pictures on your desktop that point you somewhere. There are millions out there, but try the link provided for over a 1,000 lifted from Mac OS X 10.3 aka Panther)

    You can Easily get these programs just google :)

    That’s pretty much what you’ll want for starters. You don’t need all of these, and in fact, you really only need a few to get a reasonably good looking OS X facsimile, but if you’re gonna do this you might as well do it right.

    I use StyleXP for my visual style, so that’s what I’ll detail here. WindowBlinds isn’t that different, but if you prefer it, be my guest. The first thing you’ll need to do is download a skin. I recommend Kol’s website, StudioTwentyEight for some excellent skins, but feel free to look around for any others that might interest you. Download your ZIP, and extract it to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes.

    1) Open up StyleXP and load up that baby. Your windows should now look like the skin you downloaded.

    2) Time to find a good ObjectBar skin. I’d suggest crni’s website for some excellent themes. Download the one you like best and extract it to your ObjectBar folder. Open the new folder in there (named something like the theme you downloaded) and double-click the .OBTHEME icon

    3) Next up is the dock. Open up whichever version you settled on downloading. This is pretty easy to set up. Basically all you need to do is drag shortcuts or executables to the dock and ta da, you have a shortcut. To change it’s icon, right-click and select “change icon” or some variation. To get new icons to select, make sure you put them in the icons subfolder (for YzDock) or the main dock folder (for ObjectDock).

    4) For those that don’t know, Trillian is a nifty chat program that sticks AIM, MSN, ICQ, and IRC into one program. If you don’t use it, you should if for no other reason that it can look a lot like iChat. You may or may not need the Pro version to get the skin to work. I’ve heard mixed reports, but if it doesn’t work right, I’d say you need the Pro version. An excellent choice for skins are iChat skins. Extract it to your Trillian skin directory, open up Trillian’s preferences, go to skins, and select the new skin you want to use. You can follow the readme for some more precise directions to get it looking perfect.

    5) YzToolbar and YzShadow are pretty self-explanatory. Just install ‘em and run ‘em. You can find good YzToolbar skins on the net: I’d recommend Aqua-Soft or AquaXP.

    6) Rainlendar and Rainmeter are also pretty easy to install and set-up। Just run the installer, and find a good skin. Again, there’s many to choose from. I’d suggest searching the forums at the aforementioned Aqua-Soft and AquaXP.

    7) Samurize is a bit complicated, so if you’re going to try and use it, be forewarned that it can be a very big hassle, if it works at all. I’m not even going to try and explain it in this brief overview, but if you are serious about it, check out the Samurize forums at Aqua-Soft and AquaXP.
    If you listen to music on your computer, no Aqua-fication can be complete without the authentic iTunes for Windows. Apple provides plenty of documentation on how to install and use it, so I’ll leave that part to them. If you want to make it look more like iTunes for Macintosh, check out localhost’s multi-plugin.Digg my article

    Jeffrey Lant Is A Scam Artist Beware!

    Published by djyano under Scam Edit This

    Written by Garry Conn on March 23rd, 2008

    It is one thing to make money with private ad sales, but it is another thing to do so by accepting ads onto my blog that promote services that are total scams and fraud। With my private ad sales increasing as well as the requests to take full advantage of the advertisement programs being offered on my blog, I now know that I need to be very careful and selective with who I accept into my program.

    Jeffrey Lant Scam ArtistToday I invested some time into following the links of all my private advertiser’s sites. There was one advertiser who caught my eye in particular. The advertiser was promoting a site called, LiveBizwebcast. This is a website that is part of Jeffrey Lant’s huge live webcast affiliate marketing scam. It is a lure to drive people into their live webcast where Jeffrey Lant and a few select people assigned to his scam team attempt to rob people out of over $1200 dollars of their hard earned money.

    When I visited the site that is patched into the huge network hosted by Jeffrey Lant, I could quickly see right through him. His purpose is simple: Collect as much money for as many people as possible. Quickly after logging in, I was addressed live on the webcast by Jeffrey Lant and quickly I was pushed into his product order page. I played the game as if I were just a regular visitor and for the hell of it, I decided to let him walk me through his little scam process from start to finish.

    Immediately I was asked by Jeffrey Lant, “Do you want to make money online?” Sure! I replied. “My next webcast starts in one hour, stick around and watch the entire show and you will be giving 50,000 free web site visitors to your web site of choice!”, say Lant. “All you have to do is watch my show from start to finish, you don’t even have to buy anything. This is my gift to you just for watching the show”.

    Fine whatever, so as I was doing maintenance on a few of my own sites, I had the show opened up and minimized in a separate window. After 30 minutes of listening to this little pathetic looking troll with eyeglasses, he then directed everyone back to the main lobby. There was a about 60 people including myself logged in and listening to his show.

    Moving back to the main lobby, quickly him and his top sales associate, Jim Carpenter, were working aggressively towards closing sales of their $1200 dollar product. The sad thing is that a few people were actually buying. I feel so terrible for those folks that wasted their money. Then Lant asked me what my intentions were. I told him that I have given him my valued time; however, at this time I am not interested in purchasing your product. I am however, still interested in the bonus you offered me for watching the show.

    Immediately after that, all hell broke loose. He called me names, and told everyone in the room, “here is an example of a person who has zero skills or intelligence in the business, he’s just a guy that want to rob me and score his free gift”, said Lant. “It doesn’t work that way Garry Conn. I give out the free bonuses to the people that buy the product! These are the people that deserve my gifts!”, continued Jeffrey Lant.

    He further continued with his trollish rampage by saying, “You have been very uncooperative and quite honestly a pain in my ass for the last 90 minutes you have been logged in. I am done speaking with you and as far as your time is concerned, everyone invests their time into something!”

    So, you know, Jeffrey Lant is right about one thing, people do invest their time into things. I have chosen to invest my time into calling him out and placing a warning message for people who read and or will pass through my blog in the future. Do not buy anything from Jeffrey Lant. He is a scam artist, he is rude, he is a troll and he is only concerned with taking money from people who are too ignorant to see the big picture of his operation.

    Some common mistakes people make when choosing a topic to write

    Published by djyano under Tips and Tricks Edit This

    Your blogging journey begins with topic selection, which happens to be one of the hardest parts of building a successful blog.Don’t make the mistake of choosing the
    wrong topic. By far the most common question I am asked from someone new to blogging is:-

    “What topic should I write about?”

    This is the first big decision and the first point where everything can go wrong. If you choose the wrong topic then you begin walking down the wrong path and it might be months before you even realize it and change direction.

    Here’s some common mistakes people make when choosing a topic to write a blog about:

    1. Don’t pick a subject just because you see others make money writing about it.

    2. Avoid writing about something you are passionate about, but very few other people are.

    3. Don’t base a blog on a topic you know little about or have minimal practical experience in.

    4. Be careful not to write about too diverse a range of subjects, your blog must have a focus.

    WHAT IF YOU HAVE NO IDEAS AT ALL?

    For people who have no idea what to blog about I tell them to write down a list of their hobbies, passions, experiences, education and skills in all areas of life and then take that list and derive blog topics.

    In almost all cases it’s easier to start a blog from something you have an interest in, so I try and steer people in that direction rather than get too caught up in the potential to make money.

    I honestly believe that if you have traffic you can make money, and it’s traffic that is hard to generate. The money comes easily enough once the traffic is in place, so it’s better to seek topics you have the most potential to build an audience from.

    For people who struggle to choose between a range of ideas I suggest picking one and devoting a serious amount of time to it. You have to really “throw it against the wall and see if it sticks” before you really know whether a blog topic will work.

    Sometimes no amount of research, self reflection, internal or external analysis will give you an answer. Only the MARKET can give you a definite result. You have to set a blog up and just start writing and see what happens. You can always make adjustments as you go along.

    It’s crucial to pick just ONE idea and not attempt to start a blog about every topic you have an interest in. If you spend your energy and time across three blogs you will end up with three average blogs. If you pour 100% of your effort into just one blog, you give it the best chance of success.

    At the end of a three month trial period of focusing on just one blog you at least have a conclusive outcome, whether successful or not. There is no ambiguity about whether you worked hard enough and you can honestly say you gave it your best shot. You can continue with the blog if it appears to be gaining traction or move on to a
    different topic if it didn’t.

    At the end of three months of consistent blogging you also have an ASSET. Even if your blog doesn’t have much traffic, it does have three months of content in it, so worse comes to worst, you can sell your blog and recoup a few hundred dollars and then take your experience with you into your next blog project.

    There is no such thing as failure if you actually put something out there and learn from the experience and sometimes the only way to really know whether a topic has potential is to test it on a real live blog.

    CASE STUDY

    My friend began blogging by creating three blogs on subjects he enjoyed and believed had potential to become successful. He chose:-

    1. Cars

    2. Going out in his hometown of Brisbane

    3. Windows Vista (when it was in prelaunch)

    He ended up writing one post a month to the Vista blog, one post a week to the Brisbane blog and one post a day to the car blog. You won’t have any problems guessing which blog took off.

    Yep, the car blog.

    He eventually dropped the other two blogs and focused his energy on his one main blog, which became a massive success (last I heard he was making over $30,000 a month from it!). All of the topics he chose had potential and he had interest in, but only one came out on top because of two reasons:-

    1. He found he was most passionate about cars, so much so that he enjoyed writing one or more articles per day to his blog.

    2. The car blog received the best response from the market - he built an audience.

    Sometimes you can’t make concrete decisions until you actually test your topic ideas. I suggest you narrow down your topic list and then start writing. If you have no trouble producing one new post a day, then do it for three months and see whether people like your work.

    No one can tell you what to blog about, it’s up to you to decide. Just don’t stay suspended in limbo due to decision-paralysis. Nothing will feel 100% right until you actually start doing it.Digg my article

    To your blogging success.

    XP Tips: Stop UnNeeded Startup Services

    Published by djyano under XP Edit This

    XP Tips: Stop UnNeeded Startup Services

    Along with the core operating system and programs that Windows XP runs when it starts, there is also a host of services involved. Many of these services are necessary for Windows XP to operate correctly. However, many of them are for features in Windows XP that you may not use at all. You can peruse the services and disable any service that you do not want to run. The fewer services that run, the more quickly Windows XP will boot.

    TRICK ONE :-
    Go to Start > Run > “msconfig” (without quotes) and Hit Enter

    The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer boots. You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box next to the service and clicking OK.For example you can disable winamp agent during startup, YM, MSN, etc…

    TRICK TWO :-
    Go to Start > Run > “services.msc” and Hit Enter or simply Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

    ::Some Common Services That You Might Want To Disable::
    Automatic Updates: This service enables Windows XP to check the Web automatically for updates. If you don’t want to use Automatic Updates, you can disable the service.

    DHCP Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service. If you are on a small workgroup, you can still increase boot time by configuring manual IP.

    DNS Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service.

    Error Reporting and Event Log: You don’t have to use these services but they can be very helpful, so I would leave them configured as automatic.

    Fax: If you don’t use your computer for fax services, you can disable this one.

    Indexing Service: Your computer keeps an index of all the files. But if you rarely search for files, the service is just a resource hog. You can stop it .

    Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing: If you do not use these features, plz disable.

    Messenger: This service sends alert messages on a local area network (it is not the same as Windows Messenger). If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

    Print Spooler: If you do not do any printing from the computer, you can disable this service. If you print, make sure you leave it as automatic.

    Remote Registry: This service allows remote users to modify the Registry on your computer. If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

    Wireless Zero Configuration: If do not use wireless networking devices, you can disable.Digg my article

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

    Published by djyano under Adsense Edit This

    One of the known tips for improving the performance of your Google AdSense ads is knowing where to place the ads. In this guide, we shall discuss the modification you can make to your Blog template to have your Google AdSense ads appear between your post title and post body, or between your post body and post footer. Also, we shall have the AdSense ads appear on every individual post.

    Choosing a best placement for your AdSense ads will attract more attention; attention leads to clicks; and clicks bring you AdSense revenue. Easier said. While people may have theories on where the ideal AdSense spot ought to be, there is really no standard answer because it depends very much on your Blog’s layout, contents, theme, etc. If you have been following the changes made to our Blog, you would agree that we are no guru at this. We had merely placed the ads where they fit aesthetically and not where they will get the most attention. Nevertheless, if you would accept our two cents’ worth of opinion, try to put yourself in the minds of your readers. Ask questions like why readers visit your Blog, which section of the Blog are they most interested in, and whether placing an ad at a particular area will distract, annoy or please them.

    Many people believe that having AdSense ads just before or after the Blog posts will best optimize their performance. For the purposes of this article and to give you an idea how it would look, we have inserted the AdSense code into our template to have the ads appear immediately below the article and before the post footer. If you think you would like to do the same for your Blog, the following are the steps you should take.

  • Using Blogger Feature
  • If you merely want an Ad to appear after every post or every few posts, use this Google feature instead. Go to Template -> Page Elements and you see in your layout the heading “Blog Posts”. Click the “Edit” link at the bottom right corner. You will see this screen.

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

    We assume you have a Google AdSense account. If you don’t, you can create one using the same login through your Google account. You will be assigned a Publisher identity number which shall appear in all your AdSense codes.

    Tick the “Show Ads Between Posts.” You can select whether to show ads after every post or after several posts. In accordance with AdSense TOC, a maximum of 3 Ads will be displayed. Choose the ad format and color scheme. Save the changes and refresh your Blog to see the Ads.

    While using this Blogger feature is simple and easy, you may want more control over the position of the Ads. For example, you may want it between the title and posts rather than after the posts. The following guide will show you how you can do that.

  • More Ad locations
  • Log in to your Google AdSense account.

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

    Go to AdSense Setup -> Products and choose “AdSense for Content”.

    Next, select “Ad unit” and follow their instructions on picking the size of ad, color combination, and so on, right till the end when they automatically generate a HTML code for . Copy this code and paste it into Microsoft Notepad. (If you are a WinXP user, click the Start button at the bottom left corner of your screen. Under All Programs -> Accessories, you should see the MS Notepad icon.)

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

  • Change the AdSense code
  • This heading may sound misleading. We are not at all altering the code but converting some of the characters to character entities. We have to parse the AdSense code so that it can be included into your Blog template. This is not against AdSense rules because after the code is inserted into the template, when you view the source code of the template, you should see the exact same AdSense code that Google has generated for you. Indeed, if it is anything different, it means that you have not parsed it correctly and should review the code again. Parsing the code essentially involves replacing the following HTML characters, Go here to parse your HTML code.

    After parsing your code, your final Google AdSense Code should look something like this:-

    <script type=”text/javascript”><!–
    google_ad_client = “pub-0000000000000000″;
    google_ad_width = 336;
    google_ad_height = 280;
    google_ad_format = “336×280_as&amp;quot;;
    google_ad_type = “text”;
    google_ad_channel = “”;
    google_color_border = “FFFFFF”;
    google_color_bg = “FFFFFF”;
    google_color_link = “000000″;
    google_color_text = “000000″;
    google_color_url = “000000″;
    //–></script>
    <script type=”text/javascript”
    src=”http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js”>
    </script>

  • Insert code into template
  • Login to your Dashboard. Go to Template -> Edit HTML and click the box next to “Expand Widget Templates”.

    Now search for post.body through your browser’s search function (Ctrl+F for Firefox and IE). You should see these lines:-

    <div class=’post-body’>
    <p><data:post.body/></p>
    <div style=’clear: both;’/> <!– clear for photos floats –>
    </div>

    If you want the AdSense ads to appear between the post title and post body, add the following code above the orange lines. If you want the AdSense ads to appear immediately after every individual post, add the following code below the orange lines. The code to add is:-

    <div style=’float:left;’>
    AdSense Code
    </div>

    The AdSense Code is the one you have parsed. Do NOT save the template, but click the Preview button to see if you like the placement of the AdSense ads.

    Do you want to have the AdSense code on the left of your text as shown in this screenshot?

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

    Choose the smallest AdSense format like 125×125. Insert the AdSense code here:-

    <div class=’post-header-line-1′/>
    <div style=’float:left;’>
    AdSense Code
    </div>
    <div class=’post-body’>
    <p><data:post.body/></p>
    <div style=’clear: both;’/> <!– clear for photos floats –>
    </div>

    If you want the Ads on the right of the text, like this:-

    AdSense Code in Blogger Post Body

    Insert the code as follows:-

    <div class=’post-header-line-1′/>
    <div style=’float:right;’>
    AdSense Code
    </div>
    <div class=’post-body’>
    <p><data:post.body/></p>
    <div style=’clear: both;’/> <!– clear for photos floats –>
    </div>

    If you want your Ads in the middle of the post, click here.

  • Set the AdSense ad margins
  • <div style=’float:left; margin-left:30px’>
    AdSense Code
    </div>

    Should you want to align the AdSense ad to your text, you can specify a margin or padding around the entire AdSense code. The code you can use is:-

    <div style=’float:left; margin:5px 10px 15px 20px’>
    AdSense Code
    </div>

    The first number 5px is for the top margin, 10px is for the right margin, 15px for the bottom margin, and 20px for the left margin. You should of course change these values to suit your template.

    Preview the template and if you are satisfied, save the template and refresh your Blog to see the new positions of your AdSense ads.Digg my article

    Firefox 3 Beta 4 - A Mini Review

    Published by djyano under Firefox Edit This

    With IE8 Beta 1 finally getting out the door at Mix08 last week I figured I’d check on the competition and spark up FF3 Beta 4. Here’s a quick summary of what’s new (from a visible perspective)

    1. Speed – it’s sooo much quicker to use. You’ll notice the difference in ajax heavy apps (google reader, etc) as well as in general rendering.

    2. Downloads now get virus checked. Nice.
    clip_image002
    3. New address bar – very funky. Not only address search, but titles as well

    clip_image004
    clip_image006 4. Most FF2 add-ons don’t work. You’ll need to find updates. Here’s Firebug 1.1 beta (FireFtp has a beta you can get as well)
    clip_image008
    You can see the parallel loading has increased to 6-7 items instead of 2, which explains some of the speed boost. 5. Bookmarking is a little different – note the tagging. Very cool.
    clip_image010 6. IE8 Activities work and are available from hereAdding activities from the IE8 activity gallery works, but Mitch’s Wikipedia activity doesn’t due to the use of IE8 specific javascript. Even so…
    clip_image012results in

    clip_image014 7. IE8 style Webslices can be got from here. but they’re still halfbaked (it’s obviously a quick hack and more work is needed)
    clip_image016
    When you try to mouse over the icon so you can add it, it disappears because you’ve left the webslice (doh!). I’m sure there’ll be an update soon enough, but in the meantime you can right-click to add a “webchunk” which then looks like this: clip_image018 Oh- before you make any comments on the content this is all legit ebay search results and all stemmed from the selection on the SMH web site. 8. Oh - it does occasionally crash L But at least the crash reporting is OK, and when you restart you can try and restore your sessions which is OK (unless the offending page always causes the crash).
    clip_image020 Overall– a really good experience, but being beta I’d expect that there are still issues with it I haven’t seen in the short time I’ve used it. Is it better than IE8? Some people think so - here.

    40 Simple Ways to Build Trust in Your Website Visitors

    Published by djyano under Tips and Tricks Edit This

    It is absolutely necessary that your website must create the environment of trust otherwise, most of your efforts will be wasted. Have you ever thought – how to create the environment of trust for a website? Don’t be panic, its very easy to build trust for your online visitors.

    As you already know that - you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Building trust for your online visitors cannot be achieved by just a single action. Trust is achieved by many little actions you do throughout your website and when its taken together, give users a sense of stability, honesty and legitimacy for your business and services you provide.

    Another good or bad news is that only few website owners focus on building trust in the minds of their visitors. So, if you do it well, it can become a real and sustainable competitive advantage for your business and you can keep your competitors away.

    Here are 40 simple actions you can take to get started.

    1. Your website design is the first impression. Make sure it is professional and relevant to the subject matter.

    2. Navigation must be intuitive. If visitors can’t find what they are looking for easily, they will question your competence in providing what they want.

    3. Make the website personal by giving it its own tone and voice. People buy people.

    4. Follow the HEART rule of creating online content. (Reminder: HEART stands for Honest, Exclusive, Accurate, Relevant and Timely.)

    5. Use language that is appropriate to the audience. It will build empathy.

    6. Regularly add new content to your site. It shows that the business is alive and kicking.

    7. Review all links. Doubts will quickly form in your visitors’ minds if links don’t work or, worse still, take them to error pages.

    8. Good grammar and spelling matter. Errors give the impression of sloppiness and carelessness.

    9. Don’t make outrageous and unbelievable claims, like “Read this blog and you’ll be a millionaire by the end of the week.” People are used to scams, get-rich-quick schemes and rip-offs.

    10. Publish REAL testimonials and third-party endorsements. Try to always use real names and link to websites where possible. Some sites show images of letters sent by happy customers.

    11. Publish case studies about customers you have helped, who use your product, etc.

    12. Don’t put down, curse or insult competitors. It’s unprofessional. It is better to offer an objective comparison of competitive services or products.

    13. Focus on building your long-term reputation, not on making quick sales.

    14. Write articles for humans, not search engines.

    15. Make your ‘About Us’ page personal and comprehensive. It plays an important part in making visitors feel comfortable that real people are behind the site.

    16. Publish your photo or the photos of the key people involved with the site. Again, this reinforces the fact that there are real people behind the screenshots.

    17. Clearly identify who is behind the site. Nothing creates more suspicion than a site that tries to hide the identity of its publishers.

    18. On the ‘Contact Us’ page, provide an email form, telephone number, fax and address of the company. In Europe, it is a legal requirement for sites taking funds, but even sites driven by advertising will benefit from openness.

    19. Provide a telephone number that people can call and talk to a person.

    20. Provide Web addresses linked to the website domain, not addresses from free webmail services such as Hotmail and Gmail.

    21. Think carefully about reciprocal links. If your site is about organic food and you have links to Party Poker, people are going to question your integrity.

    22. Think carefully about the adverts you display on your site. Ensure that they are relevant to your subject and audience.

    23. Write and publish your privacy policy. Be clear about what you will and will not do with any personal data you collect. State that you adhere to all data protection laws. Make it easy to read and don’t use legal gobbledygook.

    24. Write and publish a security policy. State what measures you take to ensure that all transactions are secure as well as how well you handle customers data.

    25. Ensure that you have a security and privacy policy which is linked from the footer on every page. Make the link more prominent on all the order pages.

    26. Clearly publish your guarantee. I would recommend making it a 100% money-back guarantee if possible.

    27. Clearly state your refund and returns policy.

    28. If you use PayPal, put the PayPal logo on your site. If you have a merchant services account with a major bank like Citibank or HSBC, put its logo on your site.

    29. Use Google search on your site for two reasons. First, it is a great search solution which will help your visitors find what they are looking for. Second, having the Google name on your site instills trust.

    30. If there are well-known industry associations for your subject, join up and put their logos on your site.

    31. Have a forum on your site and respond quickly to questions. Have the attitude that you are happy to help others without receiving immediate reward. As the old saying goes, ‘Givers always gain.’

    32. Allow people to comment on articles. Interactivity and an exchange of views build community and a sense of involvement.

    33. If people provide constructive criticism or comments in the forum, don’t delete them, but respond with your point of view.

    34. Use the words ’secure website’ whenever you try to get any information from visitors, including newsletter sign-ups, forum input and payment.

    35. On every page, state, “We take your privacy and security very seriously.” Link the statement to the security and privacy policy.

    36. If you are selling a subscription, offer a low-cost, entry-level option. This could be a one-day taster, ‘a week before billing starts’ or a monthly trial.

    37. Only ask for information from customers that you really need. For example, for an email newsletter sign-up, the only information you REALLY need is an email address, so that is all you should ask for.

    38. If you have pricing on your website, make it transparent. I recently went to buy a book which was advertised for $10. When I checked out, they added tax, post and packaging, and the final bill was $19.50. I didn’t buy it as I felt they had deliberately tried to mislead me.

    39. Start a small newsletter of your company/services & circulate it among your clients/employees. Also, publish it on your website regularly.

    40. Allow people to “unsubscribe” from your mailing list. This may sound very obvious, but I have found that many websites still don’t follow it.

    To ensure that you are continually improving your trustworthiness, every time you go to a website, ask yourself whether you trust it or not. Then ask yourself why you have formed the opinion you have.Digg my article

    20 things you didn’t know about Windows XP

    Published by djyano under XP Edit This

    1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

    2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

    3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

    4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

    5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

    6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

    7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

    8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.

    9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

    10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

    11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

    12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

    13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

    14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

    15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

    16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

    17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

    18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

    19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

    20. The next release of Windows XP, codenamed Longhorn, is due out late next year or early 2003 and won’t be much to write home about. The next big release is codenamed Blackcomb and will be out in 2003/2004.Digg my article
